Is the Sistine Chapel included in the Vatican Museums ticket?

Yes. There is no separate Sistine Chapel ticket: the chapel is part of the Vatican Museums and sits at the end of the one-way route, about 1.5–2 hours in if you walk at a normal pace. Photos and talking are not allowed inside. St Peter’s Basilica, by contrast, is free and has its own security line in St Peter’s Square.

Vatican Museums opening hours and free days

  • Monday–Saturday: 8 a.m.–8 p.m., last entry 6 p.m. (2026 schedule; check the official calendar for holidays).
  • Sundays: closed, except the last Sunday of each month: free entry 9 a.m.–2 p.m. (last entry 12:30 p.m.), with very long queues.
  • Closed on major Catholic holidays (e.g. 1 & 6 January, 29 June, 15 August, 8 & 25–26 December).
  • Best time: the first slot of the day, or after 3 p.m. Avoid Mondays and days after a closure.

Vatican dress code

Shoulders and knees must be covered in the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica, and guards turn people away. No sleeveless tops, short shorts or mini-skirts. In summer, carry a light scarf or wrap trousers. Hats should be removed in sacred spaces.

How to book official Vatican tickets

  1. Book on the official Vatican Museums website, ideally 4–8 weeks ahead for spring and autumn.
  2. Choose the earliest time slot available; morning slots fill first.
  3. Bring the voucher on your phone and ID; students need a valid card for reduced tickets.
  4. Arrive 15 minutes early at the entrance on Viale Vaticano — not at St Peter’s Square.
